Registration rules differ for companies and natural persons. Here is the distinction to check before you file—or assume you are exempt.
UAE companies and other taxable legal entities generally register for Corporate Tax, including free-zone entities. Natural persons follow a different threshold: registration is generally required when turnover from UAE business activities exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year. Wages, personal investment income and qualifying real-estate investment income are excluded from that natural-person test.
Late registration can carry an AED 10,000 administrative penalty. The FTA currently provides a waiver mechanism when an eligible taxpayer submits the first tax return or annual declaration within the specified seven-month period, so late cases should be checked before assuming the penalty is final.
Eligible resident persons may elect Small Business Relief when the statutory conditions are met. Free-zone entities generally still register and file; qualifying income can benefit from a 0% rate under the Qualifying Free Zone Person rules only when all conditions are satisfied.
Confirm whether the taxpayer is a legal entity or natural person, check the applicable registration deadline, verify the first tax period, and organise basic bookkeeping before the return is due.
Profit level alone does not decide whether a legal entity must register. UAE companies generally register even when taxable income may fall within a 0% band.
A natural person conducting UAE business activities generally registers once annual business turnover exceeds AED 1 million. Wages and specified personal investment and real-estate investment income are excluded.
Free-zone entities generally register and file. A 0% rate may apply to qualifying income only when the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions are met.
